When we travel I usually slot in quick sketches in between walking, canoeing, geologising -whatever the days activity is. On the 25th I had a whole day to myself to drive around sketching. First up Suilven -which is an iconic mountain -whichever angle you see it from. ( the next day I climbed it but it was shrouded in clouds -I shall have to go back again for the views) This is Cul Mor behind a really rather nice green corrugated house. Ardvreck castle in front of Quinag. When I started the sketch there were beautiful reflections in the Loch. However, the wind came up - I have photos so they could be incorporated in the collagraph. Loch Assynt

I wanted to concentrate on this trip on mountain top views. This image is my best attempt -the view from Canisp to Suilven. One reason is because it was warm and sunny -a it produced better light. B -I could take more time as my companions were not getting cold. This is the view from the col on Quinag looking down on Suilven - a wonderful view -but it simply does not make a great composition. It would be improved by working on the foreground which was not given much time. Part of the problem was that it was blowing a hoodie and I could only sketch out of the wind. And this one is simply dreadful - it was quite dull and I used a pre-grounded paper -which has resulted in complete lack of tone. It was also very cold and windy
The Summer Isles from near Achiltibuie Assynt and Coigach mountains-and Scourie from Handa Island Sandwood bay The view from Droman across to Oldshore beag
Oh the delights of a new campervan -camped at Ardmair point. A dull grey day -a geological walk around Knockan Crag. The weather appeared to perk up so we scampered up Cul Mor for the view -of a snowstorm!
Well it appears that the exhibition Mouth of a Shark in Cork is actually going ahead this July so I have decided to make my final print.. This will be a drypoint of a t shirt - pvc engraved with a dremmel. I laid the pvc on the t shirt and traced the shape, stitching etc. Next I assembled all the images I wanted on the t shirt. This t shirt "bears witness" to the experiences of migrants crossing the channel. There are migrants in the water, there are empty life jackets - a signifier for drowned migranst, there is a Border Force boat. In large letters "Welcome to Great Britain, an image of Napier Barracks - where many end up, Priti Patel welcoming, and of course 2 Union Jacks which have to be flown everywhere now. I taped off the areas that I wanted shading in and rubbed the PVC with sandpaper. I then used the Dremmel to make the lines. I rubbed the blade with pencil lead to check my details. I am booked at Edinburgh Printmakers workshop to print this on silk on Wednesday. If it works it will join the rest of my pieces on a clothes line. To see the description of the whole installation go to https://www.lindyfurby.co.uk/protest-art.html.
And that's it folks - I hope you have enjoyed the wee tour. Lockdown ends soon, we have a new campervan and are booked into campsites in Assynt - looking forward to it. My Covid discount of 20% off will finish on 26th April - so if you have seen something you like - get in quick.
Starting Day 15 of my Virtual tour of Scotland through collagraphs and plein aire watercolour sketches with a drypoint of Ben Nevis The the view north to Ballachulish from Glencoe Down Glencoe Buchaille Etive Mor Then three from across Rannoch Moor And lastly Loch Lomond - the plein aire sketch for this came from my first purposeful foray collecting sketches in the campervan in Scotland in May 2010 - eleven years ago. All these images have been made since then.
Day 14 of my Virtual tour of Scotland through collagraphs and sketches. Fingall's cave on Staffa - a really chunky collagraph with lots of texture - I dug deep into the plate - sadly texture does not show well in my photos. Iona - the sea really is that colour. Slate Island - Easedale Portnahaven Islay Collagraphs of the three southern distilleries on Islay - I sat in the gentle rain sketching these en plein aire - surrounded by the tantalising smell of whisky and seaweed.
Continuing my virtual tour through collagraphs and watercolour sketches - this is a wee concertina collagraph artist's book of the view from Allt Dearg a cottage my Mum and I stayed in for a week in Novmeber 2017. On the left the Red Cuillin and the right the Black. This is the cottage with the burn in front and the Black Cuillin behind - the first snowfall of the year picking out the contours. It was a couple of miles from Sligachan A distant view of the Cuillins A watercolour concertina sketchbook of the Cuillins from Raasay - Im rather fond of the Cuillins! A night view from Allt Dearg - the silver line in the foreground is the reflection of the moon in the burn (watercolour sketch) Sunrise - this one would be challenge to do as a collagraph. The waterfall behind the cottage Extreme sketching - one day we couldn't leave the cottage for the wind!
Continuing my tour of Scotland through collagraphs and watercolour prints - the original sketch for this was done at the point on the road to Diabeg got so steep I fell off my bike. This is the view from further up the Diabeg road with the mountains on the south side of Loch Torridon catching the evening sun Liathach - a beautiful mountain - many years ago it broke the shank in my climbing boot! A great climbing hut Plein aire watercolour sketch from the campsite at Shiedaig A remarkably still day at Plockton We stayed in a cottage at Back of Keppoch near Arisaig - for 6 weeks - this is the view from a favourite walk And of course the beautiful skerries with the outlines of Rum and Eigg. And last of all today - Sanna Bay on Ardnamurchan looking out to Rum, Eigg and Muck.
